City of West Lafayette recently issued the following announcement.
In late 2019, Mayor Dennis proposed and council passed a resolution to name City Hall after former Mayor Sonya Margerum.
Appropriate, since the survival of the Morton School building is credited to Mayor Margerum. During her second term in office, the city purchased the Morton School building from the West Lafayette Community School Corporation, saving the 1929 building designed by Walter Scholar.
It was also during Margerum’s 24-years as mayor that the building gained status on the National Register of Historic Places.
By transforming Morton to City Hall, we hope to preserve its history for another 90 years and beyond.
