Ramos and Coleman Advance to Southern Scuffle Semifinals

Matt Ramos and Kendall Coleman once again lead the Purdue wrestling team, advancing to the championship semifinals after day one at the 2023 Southern Scuffle.

The Boilermakers (4-3, 0-0 B1G) entered 14 wrestlers into the highly talented field and Ramos and Coleman were the only two left standing after the first day of competition. The pair went a combined 6-0 with three bonus point wins. It is the third straight tournament they have reached the semifinal round and as the top seeds in their respective divisions they will have a good shot to reach their third straight tournament final. Both are guaranteed a spot on the podium no matter how they fare tomorrow.

The 125 pound redshirt sophomore Ramos only got better as the day wore on in Chattanooga. He started with a 7-5 decision, added a 10-2 major decision and finished with a pin (7:25) in sudden victory against Virginia Tech's Cooper Flynn to put himself into the semifinals. The win allowed him to reclaim the team lead in fall victories on the season with four. He takes on the No. 4 seed in his class No. 16 ranked Stevo Poulin of Northern Colorado in the next round.

Redshirt senior 157-pounder Coleman sandwiched a major between two decision wins on his way to the semifinals. In his 12-3 major decision over Northern Colorado's Nathan Moore, Coleman surrendered a takedown with eleven seconds left in the match. It was the first takedown he'd given up to a wrestler ranked outside of the top-five this season, 18 matches and nearly three months into the campaign.

Additionally, his eight takedowns on the day helped him jump into 9th on the all-time career takedowns list at Purdue with 281 in his four-year career. He will face No. 4 seed and No. 11 ranked Jarrett Jacques of Missouri in the semis.

Stoney Buell, Cooper Noehre and Tristan Ruhlman all fought their way to the consolation round of eight before losing one match short of the blood round. Noehre put on a determined performance against three-time NCAA qualifier No. 21 Wyatt Sheets of Oklahoma State before losing in the tiebreaker rounds. Ruhlman earned his third pin of the season against Virginia's Ethan Weatherspoon in the consolation round of 16.

Veteran 141-pounder Parker Filius was unable to compete in the tournament due to injury and the Boilermakers did not replace him in the weight class.
